Stephanie’s Craft Closet Reveal:
I started out a little late to the game, but I really enjoyed this. I still have some unfinished areas but it is overall finished!
I started out earlier in the month cleaning out the whole closet and visualizing what I wanted it to be like, using the small amount of space that I had. I ended up purging 2 trash bags FULL of dried paint, expired materials from my teaching days or things that I had been holding on to to use “one day”.
I slowly and methodically put everything back in. I was actually able to empty out one whole Tupperware bin full of things that had no home and find a home in the closet.
I started by reorganizing the door shoe organizer. I emptied out everything and really thought about what goes in these slots. I used chalkboard vinyl attached with paper clips {because NOTHING was sticking to this material} and I am just waiting on my chalkboard pen to label them all {it was supposed to be here Friday..grr}. As I placed everything in, I wrote down in a chart what items were in each pocket for easy labeling soon!
I reorganized my drawers and purchased a file box for all of my cardstock and construction paper. I quickly cut some vinyl with my Silhouette and attached them to the front.
Finishing the closet was not an option so, I wanted to take full advantage of the unfinished pockets in this closet. I used screw hooks and bungee cords to create an area for my vinyl rolls here and wood and canvas on the other side of the closet. This way, nothing is falling over, like it was before, and they are all tucked in nice and snug in place.
As you can see, I laid down new shelf plastic. This stuff is great if you have wire shelving. We got it at Home Depot and it has tabs to go in between the slats so it sits {mostly} flat and helps avoid the all too common “drop through the slats” problem with wire shelving. When I placed everything back in, I actually found I have more room to add things! I won’t be growing out of my craft closet anytime soon {much to my husband’s happiness}.
I just threw all of my extras that I don’t access often up top in shoeboxes. If I was going to see them often, I would have covered them in pretty paper. But they are out of sight, out of mind. Here is a side by side before and after.

I am pleased to report, other than a few minor paint touch ups, I am DONE with the craft room organization. I wanted you to know a little bit about the truth of this project. Last June (before I was a blogger) I took on an organization challenge here and also chose my craft room. This is a good look at what it looks like when it is messy - which was usually the case. Also what it looked like back then, when it was "cleaned and organized." I quote that because it really wasn't organized and the space wasn't working for us at all! This room is the reason that Operation Project Organization was born. It is the central part of our second level. It is the family play zone for arts & crafts or playing games. This table is also used for gift wrapping and for folding clothes (the laundry room entrance is to the far right, you can see it on the bottom photo on the left.)
First thing we did was prime and paint the cabinets white. I also asked Marco to help me re-arrange them and we put a cabinet in the center on an angle.
